Christopher Baker works from Nature. He frequently finds it necessary to take his paintings out of the studio to work directly from Nature, observing changing light and weather conditions. In making his work he often uses an adapted trailer in order to paint on large canvases in situ on the beach. His paintings of Climping Beach in West Sussex are a manifestation of 20 years walking along the same stretch, bringing to the paintings a knowledge and freedom of expression learnt from experiencing the beach in all conditions. This interest in the constantly changing light, weather conditions and the erosion by the sea can also be seen in his paintings of Venice. A recent trip to Antartica resulted in a series of acclaimed paintings which were exhibited at both the Royal Academy in London and Petworth House in Sussex in 2006.
