Anne Magill
Born in County Down, Northern Ireland in 1962, Anne studied at St Martin's School of Art,
London. Leaving art school,
Anne was employed as a courtroom artist for both the BBC and Independent Television News.
Anne's career as an illustrator established her as one of the finest British illustrators
of her generation.
She has been a past winner of the Benson & Hedges Gold Awards and
her work has been awarded Gold and Silver medals in America and Europe. Since the mid
nineties Anne has concentrated all her time and energies on her painting.
Previously known for her powerful illustrative work, she now moved away from the
world of art directors and advertising and into her own personal world, of enigmatic
and restrained imagery. She is a master of atmosphere, with her use of tonal harmonies
and suggested lurking mysteries, she dismisses the sterile skill of the copyist. Her unique
ability is to be able to paint works of depth and subtlety, not only through her paintings
of people but in her interpretation of landscape. With her understanding of scale and rhythm,
her landscapes can represent a romantic innocence, or a foreboding force.
To listen to Anne
speak with her gentle Irish accent and her modest manner, is to be, perhaps, deceived into
thinking her attitude to her painting is relaxed. When in reality her achievements are hard
won, as she has constantly driven herself to develop and enlarge her visual vocabulary.
Comparing her paintings over the past ten years, is to see a more mature and reflective
artist, working towards total mastery of her abilities.
'The great power of her work is her Hopper-like genius to compel us to
weave a story, conjured from our own repertoire about these scenes. Though
we do not know the men or women we feel we recognize them, as they stand
gazing at an event we cannot see or walking, face hidden under a hat,
towards a destination of which we are unaware.'
Josephine Hart 2001
Anne's paintings hang in many private and corporate collections throughout the world, including the corporate collections of:
British Airways - Nike - Levi Strauss
SAP - Heineken - Canary Wharf
